How do you test a PMD on a 6.5 Diesel?

Touch the probe of the test light to the pink wire terminal in the PMD connector. With the ignition on, the light should light. If not, diagnose the circuit. Next, connect the CLIP of your test light to one of the positive battery terminals making sure it has a good connection.

What does a PMD resistor do?

What is a calibration resistor? The Calibration Resistor on your 6.5L Diesel sets the maximum fuel delivery volume of the injection pump. It is analogous to the maximum fuel adjustment screw on an old fully mechanical injection pump.

What does the PMD on a 6.5 do?

The PMD is a solenoid pack that builds up heat and uses the injection pump, and the fuel running through it, to absorb that heat. The injection pump is in the valley of the engine between the cylinder heads and the heat produced by the engine is also absorbed into the injection pump.

Will a PMD work without the resistor?

The PMd needs a resistor. I just worked on a truck that had no resistor in the PMD and after enough turns of the key(50 key turns), when the PCM looks for the resistor and doesn’t find it it’ll throw a code and run awful apparently.

What is PMD on a truck?

PMD stands for Pump Mounted Driver. The same part is also called an FSD or Fuel Solenoid Driver. (One is GM terminology, the other Stanadyne terminology). It is a “black box” about the size of a pack of cards mounted on the driver’s side of the injection pump.

Why is my 6.5 diesel keeps stalling?

CAUSE: There are two main causes. The first and most common is the PMD (also called FSD). The other possibility is the Optical Sensor located in the pump itself.

What PMD resistor do I need?

The PMD calibration resistor is required for every 6.5L truck that has a PMD. If you are buying a new PMD and don’t have a resistor or need one for your spare PMD, get it here! We recommend running the #5 if you don’t know which resistor your pump was originally calibrated to.

How do I bypass PMD 6.5 Diesel?

You can’t bypass the PMD, it has to be there and plugged in for the engine to run. If the PMD is bad, your only choice is to replace it with a good one. When you replace it, put it on a heat sink and relocate it under the front bumper it will last a whole lot longer there.

What would cause a diesel engine to stall?

The most common cause of a diesel tractor stalling is a clogged or damaged fuel cap vent. What is this? Diesel fuel caps have vents to prevent a vacuum effect. If the vent is clogged, the engine won’t be able to properly pressurize, and the engine will be stifled and die (source).

Why does my turbo diesel have no power?

Starved for fuel: This may be caused by a restricted or a wrong fuel filter, air being introduced into fuel system via porous fuel line, loose connection, weak lift pump is so equipped, etc. Restricted air intake: This could be caused by a dirty, incorrect, or collapsing air filter inlet ducting.

Why is my Turbo diesel losing power?

Problems could be as simple as dirt or debris entering the turbo and causing issues with the mechanism. Similarly, a simple hole or loose connection in the tubing will hugely impact on performance. Turbochargers also need oil to work effectively so ensure that oil and the oil filter are well maintained.

How many miles is a 6.5 turbo Diesel good for?

6.2/6.5 Life expectancy is about 300-400K with many being replaced before 100K (catastrophic failure, not wearing out) and a few at 500K, even 750K+.
