What is fludrocortisone acetate used for?

Fludrocortisone, a corticosteroid, is used to help control the amount of sodium and fluids in your body. It is used to treat Addison’s disease and syndromes where excessive amounts of sodium are lost in the urine.

What is florinef used to treat?

It is used along with other medications (such as hydrocortisone) to treat low glucocorticoid levels caused by disease of the adrenal gland (such as Addison’s disease, adrenocortical insufficiency, salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome). Glucocorticoids are needed in many ways for the body to function well.

What is the trade name for fludrocortisone?

Fludrocortisone is marketed mainly under the brand names Astonin and Astonin-H, whereas the more widely used fludrocortisone acetate is sold mainly as Florinef, but also under several other brand names including Cortineff, Florinefe, and Fludrocortison.

Why do people take Florinef?

Fludrocortisone is a steroid that helps reduce inflammation in the body. Fludrocortisone is used to treat conditions in which the body does not produce enough of its own steroids, such as Addison’s disease, and salt-losing adrenogenital syndrome.

When should Florinef be taken?

Take the medication in the morning with food. This helps to avoid upset stomach and trouble sleeping. If your provider wants you to take a dose in the morning and evening, take the evening dose 2 to 3 hours before bedtime to help you sleep better at night. This medication can raise your blood sugars and blood pressure.

Does fludrocortisone affect blood sugar?

For people with diabetes: Taking fludrocortisone can increase your blood sugar levels. You should monitor your blood sugar level more closely. Your doctor may need to increase the doses of your diabetes medications.

Does Florinef raise blood pressure?

Small oral doses of fludrocortisone cause an increase in blood pressure, sodium retention, and increases urinary potassium excretion. Larger doses of fludrocortisone inhibit the secretion of hormones from the adrenal gland. Fludrocortisone was initially approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1954.
