What is Speedcode?
A Speed Code is 4 digits in length and is used in conjunction with a 6 digit Account Code (Account Code classifies the type of revenue or expense). The Speed Code represents a larger combination of codes called a Chartfield comprised of a Fund, Department, and Program or Project/Grant.
How many weeks does it take to program a Speedcoding?
We have done problems with Speedcoding which ran for 100 hours, and problems which took three minutes. Experience has shown that many prob- lems which might require two weeks or more to program in 701 language can be programmed in Speedcoding in a few hours.
Why did Speedcoding come around?
The idea arose from the difficulty of programming the IBM SSEC machine when Backus was hired to calculate astronomical positions in early 1950. The speedcoding system was an interpreter and focused on ease of use at the expense of system resources.
