Mammoth Site, South Dakota is one of the top things to do in Hot Springs, SD and the Black Hills! You’ll especially want to look into the Jr. Paleontology Program to really get kids involved in the Mammoth Site history and excavation techniques. It was one of our favorite Black Hills vacation activities!

Which tour is best at Wind Cave National Park?

It was unanimous that the Natural Entrance Tour is the best tour to take. You can see the natural entrance of the cave and the extensive boxwork.
Are Wind Cave and Jewel Cave connected?
Because they are so close together, and because they offer such different geologic experiences, you’d be disappointed to miss either. Away from the general public’s cave tours, both Jewel Cave and Wind Cave contain passages that lead to “lakes,” areas where the water table meets the passageways, and odd formations.

Is mammoth Hot Springs Open?
Open – Year round with possible closings on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Hours – 8:00 am to 7:00 pm daily during the summer. Winter hours may be shorter. Services – Visitor information and a bookstore/gift shop.
Can you dig for fossils in South Dakota?
Public fossil hunting is allowed in South Dakota. Keep your eyes peeled, it is possible to find fossils just lying on the ground or on an exposed rock face. That being said, if it’s on public land it either belongs to the state of South Dakota or the United States.
How early should I get to Wind Cave?
I recommend getting to the visitor center 30 minutes before opening time. We visited Wind Cave in mid-October, arriving 15 minutes before the visitor center opened, and there was already a long line. The visitor center is open from 8 am to 4:30 pm, with expanded hours in the summer.
Is Jewel Cave worth seeing?
We enjoy the national parks and monuments and this one was no exception. This is definetly worth a visit. We had a great guide and the cool air provided a great break on a very hot summer day.

What time does Mammoth Hot Springs Open?
Once an Entrance Opens, it is open 24 hours seven days a week unless a temporary closure for special conditions exists. The road from Mammoth Hot Springs to Norris to Madison to the West Entrance and to Old Faithful open at 8:00 am on April 16th, 2021.
