What is meant by digital subtraction angiography?

Provides an image of the blood vessels in the brain to detect a problem with blood flow. The procedure involves inserting a catheter (a small, thin tube) into an artery in the leg and passing it up to the blood vessels in the brain.

Why is it called Digital Subtraction Angiography?

Images are produced using contrast medium by subtracting a “pre-contrast image” or mask from subsequent images, once the contrast medium has been introduced into a structure. Hence the term “digital subtraction angiography.

When is subtraction angiography used?

A technique called digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is particularly useful in diagnosing arterial occlusion (blockage). For example, it can be used to identify constriction (stenosis) of the carotid artery or clot formation (thrombosis) in a pulmonary artery. It also can be used to detect renal vascular disease.

What is DSA in medicine?

Sometimes, a computer removes the bones and tissues on the images being viewed, so that only the blood vessels filled with the dye are seen. This is called digital subtraction angiography (DSA). After the x-rays are taken, the catheter is withdrawn.

What are the benefits of digital subtraction angiography?

Although DSA is less cost-effective than conventional fluoroscopy is, this case report shows clear benefits of performing the nerve blocks with DSA in patients with radiodense structures. The advantages are increased accuracy of the needle position and a better distinguishable contrast flow.

What contrast is used in DSA?

Most contrast agents used in digital subtraction angiography (DSA) are non-ionic iodinated contrast agents, which can cause severe side effects in patients with contraindications for iodine or allergic reactions to iodine.

How long does digital subtraction angiography take?

The test can take between 30 minutes and 2 hours. You’ll usually be able to go home a few hours afterwards.

Are nurses prepared for digital subtraction angiography (DSA)?

The use of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is increasing. Nurses must be prepared to provide quality care to patients who have this relatively new method for radiographically studying the blood vessels. A description of DSA and its applications is provided. Patient preparation, assessment, tea …

Is digital subtraction angiography safe?

Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is still considered the “gold standard” in vascular imaging. However, DSA is an invasive procedure associated with risk of complications, 1% overall incidence of neurologic deficit and 0.5% incidence of persistent deficit.

What is the history of angiography?

Angiography is largely possible thanks to the Seldinger technique (first described in 1953) for intravascular access. Digital subtraction angiography, whereby a pre-contrast image is acquired, then subtracted from subsequent post-contrast images, was made possible in the 1970s, thanks to real-time refreshing of the resulting images.

What is the difference between angiography and DSA?

Angiography is a technique of producing pictures (angiograms) of internal structures by introducing dye (contrast media) into the circulatory system that show up on x-ray film when tissue is exposed with x rays. The difference between DSA and traditional angiography is that with DSA two digital pictures of the tissue are taken.
