Does Goniopora coral sting?
The red Goniopora is a very aggressive coral and care should be taken with its placement in the tank. We got a chance to see Hwee’ Goniopora displaying its sweeper tentacles supercharged with nematocysts, ready to sting and take on any coral that intrudes in its space.
Where should I put my Goniopora?
The best placement for Goniopora coral is an area with moderate light intensity and water flow. This would typically be considered the middle region of the aquarium, about halfway between the most and least intense lighting and flow and away from the water flow.
Is Goniopora easy?

Are Goniopora hard to keep?
Goniopora are a very difficult coral to keep alive and are not recommended for a novice reef aquarium hobbyist. The short, greenish-colored species are less sturdy and durable than the pink or purple species.

GPT is highly toxic, with a lethal dose found in mice of 0.3-0.5 mg/kg when the 12 kDa GPT was injected intraperitoneally. Symptoms consist of hypersensitivity, paralysis of hind limbs, diarrhea, rigidity of the entire body, and GPT can lead to a blue or purple discoloration of the skin.

They won’t sting each other if they are closely related. Some sold as gonis are close, others less so.
How do you look after Goniopora?
Goniopora can thrive in a wide range of lighting. We have kept Goniopora in different lighting intensities here at Tidal Gardens ranging from very dimly lit 50 PAR tanks all the way to bright aquariums receiving over 200 PAR. I would recommend placing them under moderate lighting intensities, between 75-125 PAR.
