How do I know what size spokes I need?

The measurements and information you need to determine spoke length are:

  1. The number of spoke holes in the hub and rim.
  2. The effective rim diameter, called the “ERD”
  3. Hub flange diameter at the spoke holes, also known as the Spoke Pitch Diameter.
  4. Left and right hub flange spacing relative to the hub center.

What size spokes do I need for 29er?

Common Spoke Lengths

Holes Rim Type Rear-O/S
32 X319 650B (27.5″) Disc 272
32 XM319 29er Disc 290
32 XM719 260
32 A119 294

How do you measure BMX spoke length?

An easy way to measure this is to measure from the cone nut to the centre of your flange, and then take that and subtract it from 55. (Standard cone to cone with on a hub is 110mm) If your hub has two different size flanges, you need this measurement for each side.

What is the standard spoke size?

The most common spoke nipple sizes are 3.23mm, 3.30mm, and 3.45mm. However, you might encounter other spoke nipple sizes ranging anywhere from 3.2mm to 9mm. Many spoke nipples are also square-shaped, including the most common sizes listed above. Some manufacturers use star-shaped or hex-shaped spoke nipples instead.

What is Hub length?

The hub length is the measurement through the middle of the wheel (or hub) measuring from end point to end point (or bearing to bearing). You’ll want to make sure to measure through the center of the wheel and not just the outside as there will be space in your rim that will go unaccounted for.

What is Hub length on a wheel?

Should drive side spokes be shorter?

Assuming that both sides use the same “cross” arrangement, the shorter spokes go on the drive side, so that the offset due to the drive mechanism will be compensated for and the wheel will be centered.

How do you measure a front bike hub?

Hub Flange Diameter – The distance across the hub’s flange from hole to hole….Here’s how to measure these distances:

  1. Figure out the distance between the lock nuts (where the hub sits in the dropouts) – 100 or 110 mm is typical for the front.
  2. Take that number and divide by 2.
  3. Then measure from the flange to the lock nut.

How do you measure front hub spacing?

If you are unsure of your frame spacing or have an older bicycle, measure the hub width to ensure a proper fit. To do this, remove the rear wheel and use a pair of calipers or a ruler to measure the distance between the inner surfaces of the dropouts.
