What is the difference between 50N and 51N protection?

Type 50 is an “instantaneous off” relay, whereas type 51 has an inbuilt time delay. The N, G, etc depicts not what the relay is, but how it is wired up. In both systems the relays are the same – it is merely the arrangement of current transformers and where they get their feed from that changes.

What is 50N 51N?

50N is a ground protection consisting of a set of residual-connected CTs. This protection is obtained by connecting three independent CTs in residual connection to the protection relay 50N. This means that you are saving money by using the Phase protection CTs to obtain a further ground protection.

The standard practice is to wire the CTs and VTs with conventional polarity connection, meaning that the primary CT polarity should be placed away from the primary protected device and that the secondary CT polarity terminal should be connected to the polarity terminal of the relay current input coils.
