What is a hypersonic Waverider?

A waverider is a hypersonic aircraft design that improves its supersonic lift-to-drag ratio by using the shock waves being generated by its own flight as a lifting surface, a phenomenon known as compression lift.

How fast is a scramjet?

Scramjets have required materials that could withstand the extreme heat created at such speed. The scramjet — from ‘supersonic combustion ramjet’ — only becomes operational at around Mach 5, or five times the speed of sound (more than 5000 km/h).

What fuel did the X 15 use?

anhydrous ammonia
The engines were fueled by anhydrous ammonia and liquid oxygen carried in tanks inside the fuselage. Pressurized helium fed the fuel into the engines, and hydrogen peroxide powered the rocket engine’s turbopump.

Who invented the Waverider?

I. The name ‘Waverider’ was coined by Dr. John Seddon of the Royal Aircraft Establishment1 for the family of wing shapes devised by the late Prof. Terence Nonweiler while at Queen’s University, Belfast and first described in print in 1959.

How long is the Waverider?

The flight test vehicle stack is approximately 25 feet long and includes a modified solid rocket booster from an Army Tactical Missile, a connecting interstage, and the X-51A cruiser. The nearly wingless cruiser is designed to ride its own shockwave, thus the nickname, Waverider.

Who destroyed the Waverider?

In mid-2020, Esperanza Cruz had a weapon powerful enough to blast a hole into the Waverider; she was coaxed to board the ship and to help to find Sara Lance.

How big is the Waverider?

Can you take a Waverider to Liyue?

As soon as Raiden’s second story quest wraps up, you can go to the nearest Waypoint and summon your Waverider. You will now be able to sail all the way to Liyue and Mondstadt if you wish, without having to worry about being blocked in by storms.

What is the speed of X-51 Waverider?

The Boeing X-51 Waverider is an unmanned research scramjet experimental aircraft for hypersonic flight at Mach 5 (3,300 mph; 5,300 km/h) and an altitude of 70,000 feet (21,000 m). The aircraft was designated X-51 in 2005. It completed its first powered hypersonic flight on 26 May 2010.

What is the X-51 scramjet?

The scramjet flight test vehicle was designated X-51 on 27 September 2005. In flight demonstrations, the X-51 is carried by a B-52 to an altitude of about 50,000 feet (15 km; 9.5 mi) and then released over the Pacific Ocean. The X-51 is initially propelled by an MGM-140 ATACMS solid rocket booster to approximately Mach 4.5 (3,000 mph; 4,800 km/h).

How did the X-51 fly at Mach 5?

An army tactical missile system (ATACMS) solid-rocket booster burnt and propelled the X-51 to achieve Mach 4.5 speed. Following this, the booster was thrown away and the X-51A’s SJY61 supersonic combustion ramjet propulsion system ignited the ramjet engine and impelled the vehicle to fly at an altitude of 70,000ft at a top speed of Mach 5 for 140s.

When did the X-51 make its first hypersonic flight?

The aircraft was designated X-51 in 2005. It completed its first powered hypersonic flight on 26 May 2010. After two unsuccessful test flights, the X-51 completed a flight of over six minutes and reached speeds of over Mach 5 for 210 seconds on 1 May 2013 for the longest duration powered hypersonic flight.
