Why is Williamsport called millionaires?
The sobriquet dates to the late 1800s when a thriving lumber industry resulted in Williamsport having more millionaires per capita than any other city. A historical part of the city is known as Millionaires Row and Williamsport Area High School sports teams are known as the Millionaires.

The area was inhabited by Andastes Indians (a subgroup of the Susquehannock, or Susquehanna) prior to the arrival of Europeans. Founded in 1795, the settlement was supposedly named for William Russell, who had a boat landing on the river. It became a centre for lumbering in the 1860s.
