What is the triple product criterion?

Lawson (1923 – 2008), who presented in 1955 an estimation of the required parameters to achieve successful fusion – i.e. more energy out than you have to put in. Lawson’s Criteria specified a minimum value for the product of three parameters, plasma density (n), confinement time (τ) and temperature (T).

How does inertial confinement fusion work?

In an inertial confinement fusion (ICF) reactor, a tiny solid pellet of fuel—such as deuterium-tritium (D-T)—would be compressed to tremendous density and temperature so that fusion power is produced in the few nanoseconds before the pellet blows apart.

What is confinement time?

Also known as containment time. The length of time for which particles are confined within the plasma, denoted by τ (the Greek letter tau). One of the three critical parameters for fusion plasmas, along with temperature and number density, that form the triple product.

What do you mean by Lawson criterion?

The Lawson criterion is a figure of merit used in nuclear fusion research. It compares the rate of energy being generated by fusion reactions within the fusion fuel to the rate of energy losses to the environment.

What is triple product fusion?

The fusion reaction with the lowest (and therefore most achievable) triple product threshold is the fusion of deuterium and tritium (D-T), two isotopes of hydrogen. A fusion power plant running on D-T fuel will have a triple product of about 5×1021 m-3 keV s or greater 3.

What is fusion triple product?

As the name suggests, the triple product is the product of three attributes of a fusion plasma: n the density of ions in the plasma (ions/cubic meter) T the temperature of those ions (keV 2) τE the energy confinement time (seconds)

What are three critical parameters in the Lawson relationship?

Later analysis suggested that a more useful figure of merit is the triple product of density, confinement time, and plasma temperature T.

How much energy does nuclear fusion produce?

At present, fusion devices produce more than ten megawatts of fusion power.

Where is cold fusion now?

“Most cold fusion research today is done in Japan. The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, a government organization, sponsors the New Hydrogen Energy Laboratory in Sapporo.
