What is VMO?
When you extend your leg fully, you can feel and sometimes see this muscle contract. That section of the muscle that’s just above the kneecap is referred to as the vastus medialis oblique (VMO). Your vastus medialis helps to stabilize your kneecap and keep it in line when you bend your knee.
Can you tear your VMO?
Injuries to the knee are a common occurrence in sports. Ligament injuries, patellofemoral pain syndromes and meniscal tears can all create autogenic muscle inhibition, and this can shut down the excitability of the quadriceps muscles – particularly the VMO.
How do you check VMO strength?
To check the contraction of VMO Sit with your legs out in front of you and a rolled up towel under the injured knee (the knee should be slightly bent). Put your fingers over the area of VMO as shown in the picture.. Push your knee down into the towel. You will feel the muscle tightening under your fingers.

Why is VMO tight?
A shortened (tightness) quadriceps muscles, a hypermobile (loose) patella, an altered VMO muscle reflex response time (VMO is slow to activate/fire), and decreased explosive strength. A tight quadriceps muscle pulls the patella high on the groove and creates stresses on the cartilage and imbalance within the groove.
Is my VMO weak?
What Makes the VMO Weak? The VMO gets weak when it does not activate as much. This tends to happen when there is pain or swelling in the knee. Swelling inside the knee joint capsule can cause the brain to stop normal muscle activation in the quadriceps.
Is the VMO important?
The vastus medialis obliquie muscle (VMO) is important for keeping the kneecap tracking correctly. This means it stabilizes the patella as it moves. In healthy, pain-free individuals the fibers of the VMO are active throughout the range of movement.
Why is it called VMO?
The portion of the muscle that is just above the knee is sometimes referred to as the vastus medialis obliquus, or VMO. This muscle is used to extend the leg at the knee and to stabilize the patella, which is also known as the kneecap.
