What does CBTO mean in reloading?

Cartridge Base to Ogive
Cartridge Base to Ogive (CBTO) is the measurement from the base of a loaded round to a specific point on the ogive (nose) of a bullet. When loading at home, you generally use a set of calipers and an ogive comparator tool to find what the CBTO would be.

Where is the ogive of a bullet?

While the term “ogive” is often used to describe the particular point on the bullet where the curve reaches full bullet diameter, in fact the “ogive” properly refers to the entire curve of the bullet from the tip to the full-diameter straight section — the shank.

What does coal mean in bullets?

cartridge over-all length
COAL (cartridge over-all length) is the measurement of the cartridge from the tip of the bullet to the base of the cartridge. The cartridge over-all length is an important dimension to understand, especially if functioning hand loaded ammunition through a firearm magazine.

Does seating depth affect accuracy?

Seating depth is one of those parameters that can make or break accuracy results—a slight shift in seating depth can radically change the group size. Every barrel has a particular set of harmonics, and when you find a load that agrees with those harmonics, you’ll see accuracy.

Does seating depth affect velocity?

To recap the important considerations regarding bullet seating depth as it relates to COAL, we can say: Seating a long bullet to the restrictive SAAMI COAL can severely decrease the internal volume of the cartridge, which will limit the max velocity the cartridge can achieve.

What is ogive shape?

The word Ogive is a term used in architecture to describe curves or curved shapes. Ogives are graphs that are used to estimate how many numbers lie below or above a particular variable or value in data.

What do u mean by ogive?

Definition of ogive 1a : a diagonal arch or rib across a Gothic vault. b : a pointed arch. 2 : a graph of a cumulative distribution function or a cumulative frequency distribution.

Does COAL affect accuracy?

Many shooters are not aware of the dramatic effects that bullet seating depth can have on the pressure and velocity generated by a rifle cartridge. COAL is also a variable that can be used to fine tune accuracy.

How important is COAL in reloading?

COAL is the cartridge over all length, a vital part of reloading. if the COAL is wrong, pressures can rise to unsafe levels in some instances. Loss of accuracy is another major problem. Determining COAL is about finding the optimum length for hand loads, for your rifle.

What is the shape of ogive?

An ogive or ogival arch is a pointed, “Gothic” arch, drawn with compasses as outlined above, or with arcs of an ellipse as described. A very narrow, steeply pointed ogive arch is sometimes called a “lancet arch”. The most common form is an equilateral arch, where the radius is the same as the width.

Do you have to crimp a bullet with a cannelure?

It must be clearly understood that a cannelure is essential to obtain good results with a roll crimp. Remember, bullets that do not have a cannelure but need to be crimped should be given a taper crimp. Taper crimping is the best choice for any firearm which headspaces on the case mouth.

What ogive means?

The Ogive is defined as the frequency distribution graph of a series. The Ogive is a graph of a cumulative distribution, which explains data values on the horizontal plane axis and either the cumulative relative frequencies, the cumulative frequencies or cumulative per cent frequencies on the vertical axis.
