What is the role of the coracoacromial Arch?

Together with the inferior aspect of the acromion and the coracoid process of the scapula, the CAL forms the coracoacromial arch that acts to limit superior displacement of the humeral head from the glenoid (Figure 1).

What is the importance of the coracoacromial ligament?

The coracoacromial ligament is a strong triangular ligament between the coracoid process and the acromion. It protects the head of the humerus. Its acromial attachment may be repositioned to the clavicle during reconstructive surgery of the acromioclavicular joint (shoulder joint).

What structures form the coracoacromial Arch?

The coracoacromial arch is the superior lateral extension of the scapula and is comprised of the acromion, coracoacromial ligament, and coracoid (Fig. 1).

Where is the coracoacromial ligament located?

The coracoacromial ligament is a strong triangular band, extending between the coracoid process and the acromion. It is attached, by its apex, to the summit of the acromion just in front of the articular surface for the clavicle; and by its broad base to the whole length of the lateral border of the coracoid process.

What is the Musculotendinous cuff?

(rō’tā-tŏr kŭf shōl’dĕr) The upper half of the capsule of the shoulder joint reinforced by the tendons of insertion of the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis muscles.

What is coracoacromial ligament release?

Release of the CA ligament resulted in increased anterior and inferior translation of the internally and externally rotated glenohumeral joint. The CA ligament has previously been implicated only as an important soft tissue structure that contributes to rotator cuff pain.

Is the coracoacromial ligament part of the acromioclavicular joint?

This combined ligament is the primary support ligament of the AC Joint. The Coracoclavicular ligaments run from the coracoid process to the underside of the clavicle, near the AC Joint. These ligaments contribute to horizontal stability, making them crucial for preventing superior dislocation of the AC Joint.

Where does rotator cuff pain hurt?

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint, keeping the head of the upper arm bone firmly within the shallow socket of the shoulder. A rotator cuff injury can cause a dull ache in the shoulder that worsens at night. Rotator cuff injuries are common and increase with age.

How long is recovery from shoulder impingement surgery?

You can expect to recover from shoulder impingement surgery within six to eight weeks. During this time, be sure to relax and give your body time to heal. The pain will likely subside within two weeks, but you can continue to ice the area and take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling.

How long does it take to recover from shoulder impingement?

Most cases will heal in three to six months, but more severe cases can take up to a year to heal.

What are 3 main ligaments that make up the acromioclavicular joint?

Acromioclavicular (AC) joint

Type Synovial plane joint; multiaxial
Ligaments Intrinsic: Superior acromioclavicular ligament, inferior acromioclavicular ligament Extrinsic: Coracoclavicular ligament (with conoid and trapezoid parts)
Innervation Lateral pectoral nerve, suprascapular nerve

What causes acromioclavicular joint pain?

Most often, trauma, such as a fall directly on the outside of the shoulder, causes an AC joint injury. Overuse (repeated lifting of heavy weights or objects overhead with poor mechanics) also can result in an AC joint injury. AC joint injuries are most common in people younger than age 35.

Is shoulder impingement the same as rotator cuff tear?

Shoulder impingement is closely related to other common sources of pain in the shoulder called bursitis and rotator cuff tendonitis. These conditions can occur alone or in combination. Shoulder pain can also be a sign of a more serious injury to your rotator cuff, a small tear or hole called a rotator cuff tear.
