Why do chrome headers turn blue?

If you have chrome pipes you’ll often notice that they will turn blue or discolor. There is a simple reason your motorcycle exhaust pipes might have turned blue. Essentially, the metal becomes discolored as a result of the heat of the exhaust going through the pipes.

Can you blue stainless steel exhaust?

It is a trademark of titanium exhausts but can easily be achieved on stainless steel as well. The blue discoloration is a result of extreme heat. If the metal is heated until it turns red, a blue color appears when it cools back down. Apply the polish with a rag and rub it in by hand.

Can stainless steel be blackened?

Presto BlackĀ® SSB is a room temperature blackening solution for most stainless steel substrates. Supplied as a liquid, the SSB is a versatile solution that is used as a brush-on blackening solution.

Is there a way to change color of stainless steel?

A thin layer of chrome oxide forms on the stainless steel, and by controlling the thickness of the oxide layer you can obtain colors that vary from bronze to blue, gold, purple and green. After treatment in this solution, the stainless steel is rinsed and given a cathodic treatment to harden the oxide layer.

Why do headers turn blue?

Motorcycle exhaust pipes turn blue as a result of extreme heat passing through them. This is usually caused by the motorcycle running lean, meaning there is too much air and too little gas being mixed together which causes a higher temperature to pass through the exhaust pipes.

What coating is best for headers?

Ceramic Coated Headers
Ceramic Coated Headers are the best option for performance and durability. Most people like the way they look and the finish will last longer than paint.

Should I paint stainless steel headers?

Stainless steel is a nonporous, durable surface, ill-suited for paint adhesion. If you apply paint directly over under-prepared stainless steel, you will end up with rapid paint failure. You must condition the exhaust with a special aesthetic primer, capable of etching steel surfaces.
