What are the types of trays in distillation column?

There are five major types of tray column; bubble cap tray, sieve deck tray, dual flow tray, valve tray and baffle tray.

Which tray is best for distillation column?

Bubble cap trays
Bubble cap trays are most efficient for the low vapour and liquid pressure in the column. Weir height helps to trap the liquid and vapours on the trays. Bubble cap trays can be a best choice in the high turndown ratio. Only disadvantages of the bubble cap trays are it creates higher pressure drop across vapour side.

What type of packing used in the packed column?

Two main types of packing in a packed column are random packing and structured packing.

Why are trays used in distillation column?

The trays have openings to allow vapor to flow upward through the column, as well as conduits (downcomers) to allow condensed liquid to flow downward (Figure). The tray is designed to promote intimate contact between the upward-moving vapor and downward-moving liquid.

What is bubble cap tray?

Bubble cap tray is a flat perforated plate with risers (like pipes) around the perforations, and caps in the form of inverted cups over the risers. The caps are usually equipped with slots or holes through which vapor comes out.

What is sieve tray?

Sieve trays are simple perforated plates with small holes about 5 to 6 mm (0.2 to 0.25 inch) in diameter. Valve trays are similar, except the perforations are covered by small metal disks that restrict the flow through the perforations under certain process conditions.

What is chimney tray in distillation column?

The chimney tray is a common device for an intermediate stream draw-out of a distillation column, such as a refinery multi-product fractionator. A chimney tray can also be utilised as a transition device where the number of tray passes is changed in a particular section of the column.

What is different type of packing used during absorption?

Mainly, two different types of packing materials are available for gas absorption; Random packing (Pall ring, IMTP, Raschig rings) and Structured packing (Flexipac, Mellapak, Gempak, BX). The overall mass transfer coefficient is high in structured packing compared to the random packing [3].

What are the types of tray?

We will discuss the operating principles of 3 common types of trays: sieve, valve and bubble-cap. Other Tray Types Many other types of trays are available.

What is tower packing?

Tower packing and tower fill materials are used in cooling towers to provide a high surface area for steam condensation without restricting air flow. Tower packing is a mass of inert, solid shapes. Within a cylindrical column, it provides a greater surface area for the gas and liquid in a web scrubber to make contact.

What are the types of packing mass transfer?

What is packed column distillation?

Packed columns are used for distillation, gas absorption and liquid-liquid extraction. The gas-liquid contact in a packed column is continuous, not stage-wise, as in a plate column. The liquid flows down in the column over a packing surface and the vapor (or the gas) moves counter-currently, up the column.

How to design a distillation column?

– feed-line and rectification section operating line – feed-line and stripping section operating line – stripping and rectification operating lines

What are the three types of distillation column?

multi-product column – column has more than two product streams: where the extra feed exits when it is used to help with the separation, extractive distillation – where the extra feed appears in the bottom product stream: azeotropic distillation – where the extra feed appears at the top product stream

What are the uses of a distillation column?

Simple Distillation. Simple distillation involves heating the liquid mixture to the boiling point and immediately condensing the resulting vapors.

  • Fractional Distillation.
  • Steam Distillation.
  • Vacuum Distillation.
  • Air-Sensitive Vacuum Distillation.
  • Short Path Distillation.
  • Zone Distillation.
  • What is a theoretical tray in distillation?

theoretical-plate. Noun. (plural theoretical plates) (physics, chemistry) A plate or tray in a distillation column that produces the best possible difference between the liquid and vapour phases in equilibrium with it; the equivalent concept in a fractionating column packed with beads or rings.
