What are roof laths?
Roofing battens or battening, also called roofing lath, are used to provide the fixing point for roofing materials such as shingles or tiles and the spacing of the battens will depend on the type of roofing material, applied horizontally.
How long do roofing battens last?
How durable are battens? Most battens are supplied with an industrially applied treatment process designed to provide a 60-year design life under Use Class 2. The relevant Standard is BS 8417:2011 Preservation of Wood.

Do roof battens rot?
You can get some rot in roof battens, but, generally, it’s at the roof’s edges, such as at chimneys or in verges – the edge of a roof that has a gable. Battens in the main body of the roof do not rot, unless there are some major long-term defects, or the tiles have become porous.

They are supplied in 25x38mm and 25x50mm sizes and can be provided in lengths of at least 3m, although lengths of 3.6m or more are typically supplied. When installed, they should be at least 1.2m long and span at least three rafters.

Each product has different requirements, for example, batten spacing for (0.42BMT) corrugated metal roofing needs to be no more than 1100 mm apart, but batten spacing for 0.48BMT metal roofing can be up to 1600 mm apart.

Do blue roof battens fade?
The Vascol Aqua Blue colour will fade over time but this will not affect the lifespan of the batten or the effectiveness of the treatment.
Do you need underlay for felt roof?
You can increase the lifespan of new shed felt by using a method that is also used to protect the roofs of other buildings and structures when they have a pitch of less than 20 degrees. To use this method, you will need to use an underlay, which will need to be put in place before you install the shed felt.
Do you need a membrane under roofing felt?
Breathable roof membranes are crucial in pitched roofing projects, as they prevent the build-up of condensation, which can lead to damp, mould and rot. They allow moisture to move out of the roof space, whilst still preventing rainwater ingress, ensuring that the roof space stays dry.
Is sarking felt still used?
Layers of sarking felt consisting of basic hessian soaked in bitumen were used. The bitumen itself is not UV stable and the hessian rots when wet. This was commonly used for nearly sixty years and is still present in many of the roofs we inspect nowadays.
Is sarking felt necessary?
The main purpose of sarking felt is to provide waterproofing to the felt, this stops damage internally creating a barrier and stopping cracked/broken tiles it also helps as an insulation factor for the building.
