Can a short luteal phase cause a missed miscarriage?

When a short luteal phase occurs, the body doesn’t secrete enough progesterone, so the uterine lining doesn’t properly develop. This makes it difficult for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus. If you do become pregnant after ovulation, a short luteal phase may result in an early miscarriage.

Can you fall pregnant with a short luteal phase?

A short luteal phase doesn’t give the uterine lining a chance to grow and develop enough to support a growing baby. As a result, it can be harder to get pregnant or it might take you longer to conceive. A long luteal phase may be due to a hormone imbalance like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Low progesterone or luteal phase defect: Low progesterone and luteal phase defect may both make conception more difficult because they prevent the uterine lining from becoming “sticky” enough to sustain a healthy pregnancy. This can impact implantation or cause early miscarriage.

Can low progesterone lead to miscarriage?

Low progesterone in pregnancy is associated with miscarriage—the question is why. One theory is that levels that are too low could theoretically cause miscarriage if the uterus is not ready to support a pregnancy. In this case, it could be that the ovaries have problems producing enough progesterone.
