Do quail like dust baths?

When birds bathe in water or saturate themselves with dust they are actively maintaining their plumage. In well-watered areas bathing is most common, in arid ones dusting is more often observed. Experiments with quail show that frequent dusting helps to maintain an optimum amount of oil on the feathers.

Do quail take dirt baths?

To keep themselves looking good, quail take dust baths. This abolition usually takes place in a sunny location with loose soil. Squatting in the dirt, they burrow in, one to two inches deep.

If possible, use potting compost (peat) for your dust baths. It’s expensive, but it’s the best.

Can you use garden soil for chicken dust bath?

The soil that you use for the dust bath can truly be anything that’s easily available to you. Loose, loamy soil from the garden or yard will work well, just make sure it doesn’t have clay in it. If you don’t want to go digging around in the yard, you can buy a bag of top soil or peat moss to use in its place.

What should you not feed quails?

Know that some types of foods can be toxic to quail. This includes avocado, caffeine, chocolate, grape seeds, meat, parsley, rhubarb, the stems and leaves of tomato plants, salty foods and treats, uncooked potatoes, and most citrus fruits. Quail will avoid anything toxic to them unless they are starving.

They are especially fond of millet and cracked corn, which you can also offer in ground-feeding areas. Low, broad platform feeders that can accommodate several birds at once are good choices for feeding quail, or you can sprinkle seed near brush or shrubs where the birds will feel secure.

For their habitat bedding you can use pine shavings, fir wood chips, sand, newspaper pellets, grass pellets, Timothy hay or non-skid kitchen draw liners. It is highly recommended that you give the quails some straw/hay to make their nests with.
