What is left mentum anterior?

For example, if the mentum presents in the left anterior quadrant of the maternal pelvis, it is designated as left mentum anterior (LMA). In a brow presentation, the fetal head is midway between full flexion (vertex) and hyperextension (face) along a longitudinal axis.

What is Mento anterior position?

n. A cephalic presentation of the fetus with the chin pointing to either the right or left front quarter of the mother’s pelvis.

What are the causes of malpresentation?

Common causes of malpresentations/malpositions include: excess amniotic fluid, abnormal shape and size of the pelvis; uterine tumour; placenta praevia; slackness of uterine muscles (after many previous pregnancies); or multiple pregnancy.

Which cardinal movement may be difficult in a mentum posterior presentation?

In cases of face presentation, a vaginal delivery can be accomplished most frequently with a mentum anterior position, but the mentum posterior position will impede the fifth cardinal movement of labor (extension).

Is left occiput anterior presentation normal?

The left occiput anterior (LOA) position is the most common in labor. In this position, the baby’s head is slightly off-center in the pelvis with the back of the head toward the mother’s left thigh. The right occiput anterior (ROA) presentation is also common in labor.

Can you deliver mentum posterior?

In this position, the diameter of the head is larger than the maternal pelvis, and it cannot descend through the birth canal. Therefore the cesarean section is recommended as the safest mode of delivery for mentum posterior face presentations.

How is malpresentation diagnosed?

On abdominal examination, the head is felt in the upper abdomen and the breech in the pelvic brim. Auscultation locates the fetal heart higher than expected with a vertex presentation. On vaginal examination during labour, the buttocks and/or feet are felt; thick, dark meconium is normal.

What is cardinal movement?

The critical diameters in a human fetus are the head and the shoulders, and the fetus must rotate to negotiate the birth canal. These rotational movements of the fetal head and shoulders are often called the cardinal movements, but in earlier publications they are usually only referred to as movements.

Why is left occiput anterior best?

Why is left occiput anterior best? It was believed LOA was the best position for baby to be in to start labor because, in the majority of women, the uterus is slightly larger on this side.

Is left or right occiput anterior better?

Rest assured, the ROA fetal position is as good as the LOA position. It’s believed the left anterior position is ‘better’ because, in most women, the uterus is slightly larger on the left side, so babies look for the most comfortable space.

Is anterior position good for birth?

Once the baby is head down, the best position for a labour is the anterior position. Anterior position means the baby’s head enters the pelvis facing your back. This is the ideal and most common position for birth (see image).

What does malpresentation mean?

Medical Definition of malpresentation : abnormal presentation of the fetus at birth.

What are risk factors for malpresentation?

Predisposing factors to malpresentation include: Prematurity. Multiple pregnancy. Abnormalities of the uterus – eg, fibroids.
