What is Patra in Hinduism?

The Patra, first translated in English by Swami Ram Charran 30 years ago, was formally known as “The Panchang,” a Hindu Astronomical Calendar that accurately tracks the lives of all individuals as well as the Earth changes as they take place from year to year.

It is believed Bel Patra is so dearest to Lord Shiva because the Skanda Purana mentions that once, sweat droplets of Goddess Parvati (Lord Shiva’s wife according to Hindu Mythology) once fell and landed on the Mandranchal Mountain which led to the growth of Bel or Bilva plant.

The devi named it ‘Bilva’ and is said to reside in the tree, in all her forms. Since every part of Bel tree is said to contain goddess Parvati, it is considered the ideal tree to worship lord Shiva. It is said that even if one touches the Bel patra, he/she is freed from all negativity, sins and ailments.

When should we not break Bel Patra?

1- According to the belief, Belpatra should never be broken on Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami, Chaturdashi and Amavasya Tithi, during Sankranti and on Mondays. 2- Lord Bholenath is very dear to the bell tree, for this reason the letter should be broken before these dates or times.

Can we reuse Belpatra?

So, if one cannot break Bael leaves on abovementioned dates, or does not have time to collect them, Bel Patra already offered in temple can be reused after washing them again.
