What is mini GBIC SFP?

Mini GBIC, also called SFP transceiver (SFP means small form factor) was announced in 2001. It has the same functionality with former GBIC module but built with a smaller form factor. Mini GBIC and SFP transceiver actually refer to the same thing, and they are interchangable.

What is GBIC transceiver?

GBIC is short for Gigabit Interface Converter, which is a standard optic transceiver that converts serial electric signals to serial optical signals and vice versa commonly used to interface a fiber optic system with a Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet.

What is Gigabit SFP?

SFP ports enable Gigabit switches to connect to a wide variety of fiber and Ethernet cables in order to extend switching functionality throughout the network.

What is an Ethernet transceiver?

An Ethernet transceiver is a hardware device designed to connect computers or electronic devices within a network, allowing them to transmit and receive messages. A transceiver consists of a transmitter and a receiver, hence the name. An Ethernet transceiver is also known as a media access unit (MAU).

What is a GBIC slot?

The industry-standard Cisco Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) is a hot-swappable input/output device that plugs into a Gigabit Ethernet port or slot, linking the port with the network.

What are the features of GBIC?

The GBIC converts the serial electrical signals to serial optical signals and vice versa. GBIC modules are hot swappable and contain ID and system information for the switch. GBIC was superseded by the small form-factor pluggable transceiver (see SFP). Combo ports are paired with Ethernet ports.

What is Gigabit Ethernet 1000BASE?

What is 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet)? 1000BASE-T is Gigabit Ethernet — 1 gigabit is 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps) on copper cables, using four pairs of Category 5 (Cat5) unshielded twisted pair (UTP) to achieve the gigabit data rate.
