To build the reservoir the Kielder Valley had to be flooded which meant the loss of a school railway and numerous farms and homes. The reservoir was officially opened by the Queen in 1982 and took a further two years to fill with water.
Are there adders in Kielder Forest?
Kielder Water & Forest Park is home to Britain’s only venomous snake, the adder. They rarely bite unless provoked so if you see one, give it a wide berth and only observe from a distance, a bite from an adder is not necessarily fatal but it can make you feel unwell.
