Why is Kielder Water located where it is?

Location. Kielder is located in an area of high land called the Pennines. This means that it receives more rain than areas to the east, which lie in the rain shadow .

Kielder Water is a large man-made reservoir in Northumberland in North East England. It is the largest artificial lake in the United Kingdom by capacity of water and it is surrounded by Kielder Forest, one of the biggest man-made woodlands in Europe.

Red squirrels – around 50% of England’s native red squirrel population live here, the largest remaining stronghold in the country.

The initial plans for Kielder started in the late 60’s and were approved by parliament in 1974. How was Kielder filled?

The reservoir is owned by Northumbrian Water and holds 200 billion litres of water. To build the reservoir the Kielder Valley had to be flooded which meant the loss of a school railway and numerous farms and homes. The reservoir was officially opened by the Queen in 1982 and took a further two years to fill with water.

Are there adders in Kielder Forest?

Kielder Water & Forest Park is home to Britain’s only venomous snake, the adder. They rarely bite unless provoked so if you see one, give it a wide berth and only observe from a distance, a bite from an adder is not necessarily fatal but it can make you feel unwell.

Leave the road at Canonbie to join the B6357 to Newcastleton and Kielder Water & Forest Park is signposted from there. From Newcastle or Carlisle follow the A69 to Hexham then follow the B6320 to Bellingham (brown – signed Kielder Water & Forest Park) and then the C200 to Kielder Water & Forest Park.

The Lakeside Way is a 26 mile multi-user trail, suitable for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users, that encircles the shimmering shoreline of Kielder Water. A haven for wildlife, Kielder Water & Forest Park is also home to around 50% of England’s native red squirrel population.
