What are planar speakers?

The term planar means that the speakers have roughly rectangular flat surfaces that radiate in a bipolar (i.e., front and back) manner. Planar magnetic loudspeakers with wide diaphragms, such as woofers and midranges, usually have vertical rows of magnets with each row alternating between north and south poles.

How do planar speakers work?

Another alternative is the planar magnetic speaker. These units use a long, metal ribbon suspended between two magnetic panels. They basically work the same way as electrostatic speakers, except that the alternating positive and negative current moves the diaphragm in a magnetic field rather than an electric field.

Are planar speakers good?

Registered. Planar speakers have much less distortion because the driver doens’t move very much. Many times this is seen as more accurate.

What are ribbon tweeters?

A ribbon tweeter uses a very thin diaphragm (often of aluminum, or perhaps metalized plastic film) that supports a planar coil frequently made by deposition of aluminium vapor, suspended in a powerful magnetic field (typically provided by neodymium magnets) to reproduce high frequencies.

Are there planar magnetic speakers?

Planar magnetic speakers can handle a lot of power without undue stress or audible strain. In fact, for a given surface area, they can handle many times the power of a traditional dynamic driver.

Is planar better?

A planar sound wavefront is usually superior and creates a better sense of imaging and deeper a soundstage effect. However, a planar sound wave might also be associated with headphones such as AKG K1000, Sennheiser HD 800 and Stax electrostatics. This is due to the models being large enough.

Is planar magnetic sound different?

Results: Typical planar magnetic drivers have slightly better soundstage. The drivers are usually larger, and the entire diaphragm moves to create a planar sound wavefront instead of the focused spherical wavefront that’s common for dynamic drivers.

How good are ribbon tweeters?

Ribbon tweeters next level of flexiibility and lightness makes for a much higher level of acceleration and a greater level of response. Their low mass and their lack of physical suspension is paramount to their performance – they respond to the subtlest of wave formations.
