How do I know if my diesel is misfiring?

Typical symptoms include rough running, loss of power and fuel economy, and the unwelcome check-engine light flashing on the instrument panel. Many system failures can be the source, but let’s break misfires themselves down into three basic types.

Can over fueling damage a diesel engine?

The diesel in the cylinder is not burned efficiently, because the fuel to air mixture is not at the appropriate proportion. Though this occurrence is rare, it can cause cylinder heads to crack or cause damage to the pistons. See the pictures below for examples of an extreme case of over fueling damage.

How do you tell if a car is over fueling?

As the driver, you will know when your car is running rich when you notice the following symptoms in your vehicle:

  1. Check engine light.
  2. The exhaust gives off fuel smell.
  3. Low fuel economy and constant refuelling.
  4. Poor engine performance.
  5. Blackened spark plugs.
  6. Spark plugs that are wet with fuel.
  7. Restrictions in return line.

What will destroy a diesel engine?

As little as 1% gasoline contamination will lower the diesel flash point by 18 degrees C. This means the diesel fuel will prematurely ignite in the diesel engine, which can lead to engine damage. Gasoline contamination can also damage the fuel pump and mess up diesel injectors.

What happens if you drive with a misfire?

Driving with a misfiring cylinder is potentially dangerous. If you lose power while driving or a second or third cylinder goes out, this can cause you to get into a car accident, possibly injuring you and others around you.

How do you know if your engine is running rich?

When a car is running rich, it means the engine is receiving too much fuel and too little air. Your car will still crank and drive if it’s running rich, but you’ll likely experience symptoms like low gas mileage, slow acceleration and strong smell of gasoline (especially when idling).
