Why is my timing chain rattling?

Timing chain noise is commonly most noticeable during cold startup of the vehicle when oil pressure and oil flow is at its lowest. Excess slack in the timing chain can cause a rattling sound or even a clanking sound if the slack is severe enough to cause the chain to contact the timing chain cover.

What causes cold start rattle?

A loud rattle type noise may be noted from the engine after a cold start. This can be caused by a faulty valve timing control actuator. Replacing the failed actuator will commonly correct this noise issue.

What does a faulty timing chain sound like?

A lax timing chain, or worse, a broken timing chain with loose parts within the engine, will produce a rattling sound when your car is idling. This rattling sound is typically most prominent while the engine heats up and disappears after some time.

Should a timing chain rattle on startup?

The reason timing chains can be noisy on start up is either the pressure in the oil charged tensioner is bleeding off, or there is extra slop in the chain system that the tensioner isn’t design to take up. Dirty oil can lodge debris in the tensioner that will keep the check valve open bleeding off oil pressure.

How can I tell if my timing chain is going bad?

Common signs of a faulty timing chain include engine misfires, metal shavings found in the oil, and rattling sounds from the engine while idling….

  • Engine misfires or runs poorly.
  • Metal shavings found in the oil.
  • Engine won’t start or fails.
  • Check Engine Light is on.
  • Engine rattles while idling.
