How does a digital downconverter work?

In digital signal processing, a digital down-converter (DDC) converts a digitized, band-limited signal to a lower frequency signal at a lower sampling rate in order to simplify the subsequent radio stages. The process can preserve all the information in the frequency band of interest of the original signal.

What is DDC and DUC?

Digital Up Converters (DUC) and Digital Down Converters (DDC) are widely used in communication systems for scaling the sample rate of signals. Digital up conversion is required when a signal is translated from baseband to intermediate frequency (IF) band.

What is IQ data in RF?

Quadrature signals, also called IQ signals, IQ data or IQ samples, are often used in RF applications. They form the basis of complex RF signal modulation and demodulation, both in hardware and in software, as well as in complex signal analysis.

What is RF downconverter?

an RF downconverter is a device which converts high radio frequency signal to low radio frequency signal is known as RF downconverter. Like RF upconverter, an RF downconverter will also have either one or two stages of mixing. Often RF downconverter is used in combination with RF LNA (Low Noise Amplifier).

What is IQ in digital communication?

I/Q signaling refers to the use of two sinusoids that have the same frequency and a relative phase shift of 90°. Amplitude, phase, and frequency modulation can be performed by summing amplitude-modulated I/Q signals. Quadrature modulation refers to modulation that involves I/Q signals.

What is upconversion and downconversion?

Upconversion (UC) and downconversion (DC) are the nonlinear optical process. In the UC, a species is excited by multiple low-energy photons, i.e. photons with a long wavelength, and emits a single, high-energy photon, i.e. photons with a shorter wavelength [3].

What is frequency downconversion?

When the desired frequency is less than the second input frequency, the process is called downconversion. The RF is then the input while the IF is the output. When the desired output frequency is greater than the second input frequency the process is called upconversion.

What do RF mixers do?

An RF (or IF) mixer (not to be confused with video and audio mixers) is an active or passive device that converts a signal from one frequency to another. It can either modulate or demodulate a signal.

What does an IQ mixer do?

An IQ-mixer consists of two balanced mixers and two hy- brids. It provides two IF signals with equal amplitudes which are in phase quadrature. These devices play an in- creasing role in the processing of high-frequency signals, especially as modulators and demodulators.

Does DDC improve sound quality?

I’m very happy with the music quality with around 50 hours of use on the combo. I have read elsewhere that adding a DDC between the server and the DAC can, in some instances, vastly improve the sound quality by converting the signal to I2S which is available to use on the Pontus.

What is I2S interface?

I²S (Inter-IC Sound, pronounced “eye-squared-ess”), is an electrical serial bus interface standard used for connecting digital audio devices together. It is used to communicate PCM audio data between integrated circuits in an electronic device.

What is IQ modulation used for?

IQ modulators are versatile building blocks for RF systems. The most common application is generating RF signals for digital communication systems.

What is a digital down converter?

Digital down converter. In digital signal processing, a digital down-converter (DDC) converts a digitized, band limited signal to a lower frequency signal at a lower sampling rate in order to simplify the subsequent radio stages.

What is upconversion in digital signal processing?

In most digital signal processing devices, any signal processing is performed in the baseband, i.e. where the signals are centered around the DC frequency. These baseband signals are mainly complex-valued. However, only real-valued signals can be sent with real-world physical devices. The process of upconversion thus has two purposes:

How to interpret the spectrum of a downconverted signal?

Let us again look at the spectrum of both downconverted signals: First of all, we see that the downconverted signal has componenents around f = 0 and some images around f = 2 f c. Without going deeply into the maths, we can intuitively explain this: The blue signal s ( t) is multiplied by a cosine in time domain.

What is an RF downconversion device?

These devices are used in receiver applications to downconvert radio frequency (RF) signals to the desired intermediate frequency (IF) while ensuring low noise and high image rejection performance.
