What is a tokamak?

Tokamak. The tokamak is one of the several types of magnetic confinement devices being developed to produce controlled thermonuclear fusion power. As of 2016, it is the leading candidate for a practical fusion reactor.

What is a TCV tokamak?

TCV is a medium size tokamak. It is characterized by a highly elongated, rectangular vaccuum vessel and by 16 poloidal coils for plasma shaping equally shared out into two stacks located on both sides of the vaccum vessel as shown on the figure. The coil represented by a long vertical rectangle is the ‘ OH-coil ‘.

What is the highest temperature a tokamak can reach?

The most recent tokamak developed, ST-40, reached 15 million degrees Celsius in 2018. Tokamak Energy’s design is based on a spherical tokamak using high temperature superconductors. Tokamak Energy is a spin-off of the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy based in Oxfordshire.

Was T-1 the first tokamak in history?

The paper presented the results Soviet fusion scientists had achieved in an “experimental arrangement”—a small fusion machine which is generally considered to be the first tokamak in history. Nowhere in the article did the word “tokamak” appear, nor did the “arrangement,” now referred to as T-1, have a name of its own.

Why does a tokamak need to be heated?

In current tokamak (and other) magnetic fusion experiments, insufficient fusion energy is produced to maintain the plasma temperature, and constant external heating must be supplied.

What is the maximum power output of a tokamak?

As of 2020 , JET remains the record holder for fusion output, reaching 16 MW of output for 24 MW of input heating power. The word tokamak is a transliteration of the Russian word токамак, an acronym of either: to roidal cham ber with ax ial magnetic field.

What is a limiter in a tokamak?

A solution used on most tokamak designs is the limiter, a small ring of light metal that projected into the chamber so that the plasma would hit it before hitting the walls. This eroded the limiter and caused its atoms to mix with the fuel, but these lighter materials cause less disruption than the wall materials.
