What is a high Koc value?

Kd or Koc measures the mobility of a substance in soil. A very high value means it is strongly adsorbed onto soil and organic matter and does not move throughout the soil. A very low value means it is highly mobile in soil.

What are the units for KOC?

Thus a normalised organic carbon to water partition coefficient (KOC), described as the ratio between the sorption coefficient Kd, and the organic carbon content of the sorbent, in units of mass of organic carbon (OC) per mass of soil (g OC/g soil) is commonly used to assess the extent to which an organic chemical is …

What is Koc and Kow?

KOC = organic carbon partition coefficient; KOW = octanol-water partition coefficient.

How do you measure the concentration of pesticides?

In sorption experiments the concentration of pesticides in soil solution is measured using various methods which include UV spectrophotometry, Gas Liquid Chromatography (GLC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and radiotracer techniques.

What is the adsorption coefficient?

An important parameter is the adsorption coefficient which is defined as the ratio between the concentration of the substance in the soil/sludge and the concentration of the substance in the aqueous phase at adsorption equilibrium.

How is pesticide use measured?

Around the world, use data are usually reported in kilograms of pesticide active ingredient applied per hectare, rather than pounds per acre. Very few pesticide active ingredients are applied in a 100% pure form, but virtually all pesticide use data is based on pounds or kilograms of active ingredient applied.

What is concentration of insecticide?

Overall, the concentration of pesticides ranged from 1.0 μg kg−1 to 251 μg kg−1, with a mean of 16 μg kg−1. The concentration of the primary group, organophosphates (OPs), ranged from 1.23 μg kg−1 to 239 μg kg−1, with a mean of 23 μg kg−1.

What is a low Kow value?

Chemicals with low Kow values (e.g., less than 10) may be considered relatively hydrophilic; they tend to have high water solubilities, small soil/sediment adsorption coefficients, and small bioconcentration factors for aquatic life.

How do you read Kow?

This means that the smaller the log Kow, the more soluble the substance is in water. Consequently, this means the higher the log Kow, the more soluble the substance is in fatty (nonpolar) substances.

What is a high log Kow value?

Log KOW values are typically between −3 (very hydrophilic) and +10 (extremely hydrophobic).

What does a high log Kow value mean?

What is adsorption capacity?

Adsorption capacity (or loading) is the amount of adsorbate taken up by the adsorbent per unit mass (or volume) of the adsorbent. From: Handbook of Natural Gas Transmission and Processing (Fourth Edition), 2019.

How is adsorption coefficient calculated?

Legend: Qe = x/m, the amount of substance adsorbed per mass of adsorbent at equilibrium; Ce = C, residual adsorbate concentration in solution at equilibrium; x, amount adsorbed per mass of adsorbent; m, amount of adsorbent; K = Kf’ intercept and n = 1/nf’, slope of Freundlich isotherm when expressed as log(x/m) = log K …

How is insecticide application rate calculated?

The weight of pesticide product to apply per acre is the pesticide application rate (pounds per acre) divided by the percent concentration. You want to apply 1.5 pounds of atrazine and the label shows atrazine: 80 percent. Calculate number of acres sprayed by each full tank.

How do you calculate active ingredient percentage?

To accurately calculate the percentages:

  1. Weigh all of your ingredients (column D in the example above).
  2. Total the weight (cell D8 in the example).
  3. Divide the weight of the individual ingredient by the total weight of all ingredients and multiply by 100 (formula example shown for beeswax in cell E2).

What does SC mean in pesticides?

suspension concentrate
The powder is suspended in a small amount of liquid to make the thick liquid formulation. Abbreviations used include “F” for flowable, “L” for liquid, and “SC” for suspension concentrate.

What does high log Kow mean?

What are the K OC values for pesticides?

K oc values can vary substantially, depending on soil type, soil pH, the acid-base properties of the pesticide and the type of organic matter in the soil.

Is higher Koc or KD better for pesticides?

For pesticides, higher Koc or Kd is better because such pesticides are less likely to leach or occur as surface runoff to contaminate ground water. However, if Koc of a substance is very high (for example, log Koc >4.5 ), we should then be concerned with the potential adverse effects of the substance on terrestrial organisms such as earthworms.

What is the difference between the KOC and Gus values?

Koc is derived from laboratory data. Many soil and pesticide factors may influence the actual sorption of a pesticide to soil. The GUS or Groundwater Ubiquity Score is an empirically derived value that relates pesticide persistence (half-life) and sorption in soil (sorption coefficient, Koc).

What is the sorption coefficient of pesticides?

The sorption coefficient (Koc) describes the tendency of a pesticide to bind to soil particles. Sorption retards movement, and may also increase persistence because the pesticide is protected from degradation. The higher the Koc, the greater the sorption potential.
