What size headset spacers do I need?

When choosing headset spacers the most important thing is to match the size to the diameter of the fork steerer tube. The most common steerer diameters are 1”,1 1/8”, 1.5” and tapered.

Can I add spacers to my headset?

The first and easiest way to adjust handlebar height is by moving headset spacers. Headset spacers sit on the fork’s steerer tube and help pre-load the headset bearings during adjustment. Generally, most bikes have 20 to 30mm of headset spacers that can be moved freely above or below the stem.

Do I need a headset shim?

If you are attempting to preload the bearing and, no matter how tight you get the preload bolt, there is still movement in the headset then you likely require Shim Spacers.

Do I need a spacer above my stem?

You should always leave some length of the steering tube above the stem and put a spacer above the stem so that the entire stem clamp is clamped around a cylinder of constant diameter.

How many spacers should I have under my stem?

Typical range with the right size bike for a normal rider is 0-3 cm of spacers below the stem.

Are all bike headsets the same size?

Threaded headset sizes are designated by the outer diameter of the steering column. This can seem confusing, because the head cups do not measure the named standard. The threaded standards are 1 inch, 1-1/8 inch, and 1-1/4 inch headsets. The various standards are generally not interchangeable.

Does headset stack height matter?

Yes as long as the part they’re measuring above and below the head tube are actually supportive – like threaded headset cups or threadless external headset cups pressed into the head tube. They actually structurally add to the length of the head tube, making it “longer”.

Do you need spacers on MTB stem?

It is also possible that the new stem is taller which may require you to remove a spacer. When dealing with a carbon steerer tube, it is critical to have the steerer tube go all the way through the stem, in order to reduce stress on the end of the steerer tube. It is then necessary to have a spacer on top of the stem.

Why does my headset keep coming loose?

Headsets usually become loose because one of the headset pieces changed positions, or as a result of the stem and top nut loosening. To fix this requires tightening and locking the adjustment so it stays in place.

How much is too much spacers?

Any spacer above 10mm will have a 10mm lip on the front for the wheel to rest on – this is a slight benefit to going with a bigger spacer. Also be sure to measure the outer diameter of the hub lip and get a wheel spacer that will fit that; too small and it won’t fit, too big and it won’t support the wheel properly.

How tight should headset cap be?

A god rule of thumb is to tighten your headset cap bolt until it is causing some friction with steering and then back it off until it’s tight enough to keep the stack neatly in place. This is typically 1/8th to 1/4 of turn. Give your headset spacers a twist. You should not be able to move them much, if at all.

How do I determine my stack and reach?

Stack is the vertical distance from the centre of the bottom bracket to the mid point at the head tube. Reach is the horizontal distance from the centre of the bottom bracket to the middle of the head tube.

How do you know if your headset is too tight?

With the front tire off the ground check to be sure that the wheel flops from side to side without your hands on the handlebar. A headset that’s too tight will hold the bike’s steering in place or slow it down as it flops back and forth.
