How does a coil ignition system work?

The basic principle of an ignition coil To produce the required high voltages, ignition coils make use of the relationships that exist between electricity and magnetism. When an electric current flows through an electrical conductor such as a coil of wire, it creates a magnetic field around the coil (Figure 2).

Where does ignition coil get power?

Power from the ignition coil is supplied to the rotor. The rotor spins in time with the engine. When the end of the rotor is near one of the contacts, electricity arcs to the contact. From there, the power travels down a spark plug wire to the associated spark plug.

An ignition coil (also called a spark coil) is an induction coil in an automobile’s ignition system that transforms the battery’s voltage to the thousands of volts needed to create an electric spark in the spark plugs to ignite the fuel.

Why do ignition coils fail?

The overheating of ignition coils can hinder their ability to conduct electricity. Wear and tear is a common reason for ignition coils failing. It causes degrading of the insulation between the primary and secondary coil windings and the primary coil. The reduction in insulation can cause the coil to overheat.

When the high voltage produced by the ignition system is applied between the center electrode and ground electrode of the spark plug, the insulation between the electrodes breaks down, current flows in the discharge phenomenon, and an electrical spark is generated.

Excessive heat and vibration can cause the insulating material to break down and create internal coil failure. Worn secondary ignition components such as spark plugs or wires can cause a coil work harder, require more voltage, and therefore significantly reduce the operating life of the coil.

A spark plug won’t fire properly if its electrodes have been worn thin, if they are covered with combustion deposits or if they’re wet. If the plug has seen many hours of service, the electrodes may just be worn out, and replacing the plug will restore normal engine operation.
