What is the port for ICMP?

ICMP has no concept of ports, as TCP and UDP do, but instead uses types and codes. Commonly used ICMP types are echo request and echo reply (used for ping) and time to live exceeded in transit (used for traceroute).

What does ICMP type 3 mean?

destination unreachable
ICMP error messages of Type: 3 represent a “destination unreachable” situation, where code values clarify the type of unreachability, as follows: 0 = net unreachable; 1 = host unreachable; 2 = protocol unreachable; 3 = port unreachable; 4 = fragmentation needed and DF is set; 5 = source route failed.

What does ICMP 1 mean?

The second byte called code specifies what kind of ICMP message it is. For example, the destination unreachable message has 16 different codes. When you see code 0 it means that the destination network was unreachable while code 1 means that the destination host was unreachable.

What is the ICMP type?

ICMP type is the first 8 bits in the ICMP message header. It provides a brief explanation of what the message is for so the receiving network device knows why it is getting the message and how to treat it. For example, a Type 8 Echo is a query a host sends to see if a potential destination system is available.

Why ICMP has no port number?

The ICMP packet does not have source and destination port numbers because it was designed to communicate network-layer information between hosts and routers, not between application layer processes.

How many types of ICMP are there?

Identifying default ICMP types

ICMP Type Message
0 Echo reply
3 Destination unreachable
4 Source quench
5 Redirect

Does ICMP use port numbers?

What port is port 7?

tcp Echo
Port 7 Details

Port(s) Protocol Service
7 tcp Echo
7 udp wol
7 tcp,udp
7 tcp,udp echo

Why do ICMP not have ports?

Is ICMP same as ping?

Ping operates by means of Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) packets. Pinging involves sending an ICMP echo request to the target host and waiting for an ICMP echo reply.

Does TCP use ICMP?

Unlike the Internet Protocol (IP), ICMP is not associated with a transport layer protocol such as TCP or UDP. This makes ICMP a connectionless protocol: one device does not need to open a connection with another device before sending an ICMP message.
