What is the current NFPA 13 edition?

The recently released 2022 edition of NFPA 13, Standard for the Installation of Sprinkler Systems contains a number of significant changes. While the 2019 edition of the standard underwent a dramatic reorganization, it was a relatively quiet cycle for technical revisions.

What NFPA standard is used for the installation of sprinklers and Which edition?

NFPA 13 specifies how to properly design and install a sprinkler system using the proper components and materials after it has been determined that a sprinkler system is required.

What is the difference between NFPA 13 and 13R?

In other words, NFPA 13R requirements provide for a level of protection that allows occupants to escape a building in the event of a fire. Conversely, NFPA 13 provides protection to not only get people out to safety, but also to control or extinguish the fire – saving the building and its contents.

What is the minimum pressure on one sprinkler head as required by NFPA 13?

7 psi
NFPA 13 establishes a minimum pressure of 7 psi, even when the calculation procedure yields a smaller value. This ensures that sprinklers produce the correct spray pattern. However, the NFPA 13 also provides exceptions to the method, which are covered in Chapter 7.

What is the NFPA standard that relates to automatic Sprinkler Systems?

The industry benchmark for design and installation of automatic fire sprinkler systems, NFPA 13 addresses sprinkler system design approaches, system installation, and component options to prevent fire deaths and property loss.

What is the NFPA standard that relates to automatic sprinkler systems?

How do I calculate psi for sprinklers?

Finding the Flow Rate or GPM

  1. Equation: Static pressure – friction loss +/– change in elevation = psi available to sprinkler.
  2. Example: You measure your static pressure at 65 psi and your total flow rate from your spigot at 10 gpm.

What is the maximum distance between two sprinkler heads?

15 feet
The maximum spacing between two sprinklers is determined by the rating on the sprinkler head (usually 15 feet, but there are other spacing distances, depending on the manufacturer). The minimum spacing between two sprinklers is 6 feet.

Does NFPA 13 require sprinklers in closets?

Yes. Section 8.5. 5.4 requires sprinklers in all closets and compartments. There are limited exceptions specified in Section 8.15.

How do I calculate sprinkler spacing?

Take the sprinkler head watering DIAMETER and multiply it by 0.6 to get the absolute maximum distance that should ever occur between any two adjacent sprinklers. (Remember most manufacturer’s give you the radius of the sprinkler, you need to multiply by 2 to get the diameter.)

What is the maximum water pressure for a sprinkler system?

Different types of irrigation equipment have different ideal operating pressures for maximum efficiency. For rotors, this is about 45 psi, with an operating range of 25 to 65 psi. For spray heads, it is 30 psi, with an operating range of 15 to 30 psi.
