So in 1967 they built the current distillery in which they produce today. The two distilleries ran side-by-side as Clynelish A and Clynelish B for a while, as they wanted to make sure they had perfected the taste in the new space….Clynelish distillery.

Most of the whisky produced as Brora after 1973 is in the lightly peated Highland style.

Is clynelish 14 Coloured?

They release very few bottlings as a consequence, but the Clynelish 14 Year Old is one of them. Colour: pure gold, summer sun through to autumnal tones. On the nose: a gentle, classic aroma with a bit of everything thrown in: distant dried fruits, blood orange, sea spray, malts, woody vanilla notes. Very well balanced.

Is clynelish peated?

It’s said to be a coastal Highland whisky, and it is actually lightly peated, but don’t go expecting an Islay or Island-style experience here.

What does clynelish taste like?

Palate: Somewhat thin mouthfeel, but also soft with round, welcoming flavors of caramel. The peat notes dance on the palate – sprightly and bright – while the whole evolves to a saltwater taffy-like interplay of sweet, salty, and fruity.

Yes, a quite long, bitter sweetness at the finish, and it’s peppery, not oaky… I think… A good whisky, and a very good whisky for its price level. I thin one has to try a few glasses of this whisky before giving it any stars.

The original Clynelish distillery was built in 1819, adjacent to the present operational Clynelish distillery, which was built in 1967. When Clynelish first started distilling, in the years 1820-1822, they were producing around 12,000 gallons (around 54,000 litres) per year.

Where did the name Clynelish come from?

The Clynelish name started life in 1819 when a distillery was founded in the village of Brora by the Marquis of Stafford, later known as the Duke of Sutherland. This notorious character is more famous in Scotland for his part in the Highland Clearances of the same year, when he evicted around 15,000 crofters from his land in order to farm sheep.
