In 1 Corinthians 12 Paul mentions tongues and prophecy along with other gifts, and affirms that Christians do not all receive the same gifts (12:29-30). But in 1 Corinthians 14:4 Paul says, “Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy”.

Where did the gift of tongues come from?

The gift of tongues is first mentioned in the Bible in the Book of Acts when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles on the Day of Pentecost. On that day, the apostles miraculously began speaking in an unfamiliar language, allowing people of other language groups to understand them.

    The gift of speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift. It means speaking with words or in a language one doesn’t know in order to edify both oneself and others. Jesus foretold of speaking in tongues: “And these signs will follow those who believe… they will speak with new tongues.” Mark 16:17.

    What really were the gift of tongues?

    The gift of tongues was a divinely bestowed supernatural ability to speak in a human language that had not been learned by the one speaking. According to the Apostle Paul, when believers exercised the gift of tongues in church, they were to speak one at a time, and only two or three were to speak in a given service ( 1 Cor. 14:27 ).

    Are tongues the least of all gifts?

    Tongues was the least valuable of all the spiritual gifts (1Co 12:27–28). This is evident from the list given by Paul in 1Co 12:27–28. This is evident from the word “appointed,” which is tithemi, defined by Thayer’s Lexicon in this verse as, “to set with design, in a certain arrangement or position.”
