What is FlexRAID?

FlexRAID is a highly scalable and smart storage system that turns independent hard drives of various sizes, makes, and models into storage pools and storage pools into storage clouds.

Does RAID 1 offer redundancy?

RAID-1. The next-simplest RAID level uses mirroring. This takes all data written to one drive, and writes it in parallel to a second drive. This provides the highest redundancy since there is a 1-for-1 copy of all data written.

Why would you choose RAID 6 over RAID 1?

RAID 1 of a pair of drives is easy to do, but only 50% usable space. RAID 6 of a handful of drives will survive 2 failures, very slightly slower due to parity calculations. RAID 10 is striped RAID 1, can survive at least 1 failure, and is quite fast, but 50% usable capacity may be too expensive compared to RAID 6.

Does RAID 5 make better use of volume space than RAID 1 Why or why not?

In RAID 5, data is equally divided in all disks and minimum number of physical disks needed is 3. The main advantages of RAID 5 over RAID 1 are no need of large space, supports data accessing at the time of recovery and high security of data.

Can you lose a drive with RAID 1?

RAID 1: A RAID 1 configuration is best used for situations where capacity isn’t a requirement but data protection is. This set up mirrors two disks so you can have 1 drive fail and still be able to recover your data.

What is faster RAID 1 or RAID 5?

Read and Write Operations on RAID 1 Read operations are faster on RAID 1 compared with using only one physical disk. This is because data can be read in parallel. Read requests are sent to each physical drive, and the drive with the fastest performance can return data to the controller first.

Does flex-raid protect my data if one drive fails?

Yes No NETGEAR’s Flex-RAID technology allows you to choose from among several industry-standard RAID levels: JBOD. This most basic RAID level does not protect your data from loss if one of your drives fails. JBOD is available only on volumes consisting of a single hard disk.

What is the difference between flexraid and snapraid?

Like Flexraid, SnapRAID uses snapshot RAID; the array disks are independent NTFS volumes; you can start with data on the drives and add drives at will; multiple parity disks are supported. 1) The HDD SMART tools work fine for SATA/eSATA attached array drives but I have never been able to get it to work for USB attached array drives.

What are the advantages of using RAID 1?

RAID 1 provides excellent fault tolerance. As long as one of the physical drives in the array is functional, the RAID is operational. RAID 1 is hot-swappable; i.e., it is possible to replace a failed disk while keeping the system operational.
