What are symptoms of PID infection?

Symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)

  • pain around the pelvis or lower tummy.
  • discomfort or pain during sex that’s felt deep inside the pelvis.
  • pain when peeing.

What causes PID infection?

The main cause of PID is through a sexually transmitted infection (STI) such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea or mycoplasma genitalium. These bacteria usually only infect the cervix, where they can be easily treated with antibiotics.

Can PID be cured?

Can PID be cured? Yes, if PID is diagnosed early, it can be treated. However, treatment won’t undo any damage that has already happened to your reproductive system. The longer you wait to get treated, the more likely it is that you will have complications from PID.

Is PID a STD?

It’s not a sexually transmitted infection, but it’s often caused by untreated sexually transmitted infections — most commonly, gonorrhea and chlamydia. That’s one of the reasons routine gynecological checkups are important for sexually active women.

Can you pass PID to your male partner?

The bacteria that cause PID can spread through sexual contact. If you’re sexually active, your partner should also get treated for PID. Men may be silent carriers of bacteria that cause pelvic inflammatory disease. Your infection can recur if your partner doesn’t receive treatment.
