What causes a loose gear stick?
The motion of the gearstick is transferred via those linkages or cables to the internal workings of the transmission and the gearshift is made. If free-play or looseness develops in these linkages or cables, or the pivot of the gearstick itself, then the sloppiness you’re feeling can occur.
Why does my gear shifter move freely?
It might be because of a broken shifter cable. The gear lever is moved out of the switch position when we stretch the cable. For example, in cars with an extension switch cable that goes from P to D, it will display on the panel as L (represents Low Gear) or N (Neutral).

The most common indicator of a stretched transmission cable is a grinding noise. When you let off the clutch, the stretched cable cannot push or pull the lever sufficiently, and you will hear it grinding. This is different than the grinding from a worn clutch, which happens when you engage a gear.
