What is traction force microscopy used for?

Traction force microscopy (TFM) is an experimental method for determining the tractions on the surface of a biological cell by obtaining measurements of the surrounding displacement field within an in vitro extracellular matrix (ECM).

Generated traction forces (arrows) within the focal adhesions (FA) are transmitted to integrins causing the bead displacement. An optical microscope records the displacement of the beads at the focal plane. The deformation is measured as a displacement of fluorescent beads embedded in the gel.
