Does a table top need breadboard ends?

Please note that breadboards are NEVER necessary. A properly-milled and constructed panel should generally stay flat under normal conditions, so the only time I add a breadboard end is if I think the design benefits from it visually. Learn to make nice flat panels here.

Should I glue breadboard ends?

For some methods, such as screws or nails, gluing the joint is probably not a good choice because you end up with a cross-grain glue joint. With dowels, glue is a necessity but you may decide only to glue the center or one side of the joint to allow for some movement.

How wide should breadboard ends be?

The breadboard ends are usually 2″ to 3″ wide, but you can make them wider or narrower for larger or smaller panels, if you wish. In either case, make the mortise depth about two-thirds the width of the end piece.

What is the point of breadboard ends?

Breadboard ends serve two purposes. They are a decorative feature, adding an interesting element to the table’s design and they are functional, helping to aid in maintaining the structure and stability of the large center table panels as they naturally expand and contract.

Can you use pocket holes on breadboard ends?

Attaching the “breadboard end” with pocket screws prevents that movement and will cause the panel to crack over time. Pocket holes can be a great shortcut, but sometimes you save more by spending a little extra time to do the job properly.
