What does a chain mortiser do?

A chain mortiser is a tool designed to cut square holes into a piece of wood, often to create mortise and tenon joints or post and beam fittings. Like other mortisers, the chain mortiser is designed to cut material in a square shape, which drill bits often cannot do.

Can I use my drill press as a mortiser?

Simple improvements make a mortising attachment work great. Even though they’re sexy, benchtop mortising machines aren’t the only power-tool option when it comes to cutting square-shouldered mortises. A drill-press mortising attachment can be just as effective and it costs a lot less.

What is the difference between a mortiser and a drill press?

Drill press mortising is slower, but it’s much more pleasant, a lot quieter and much less nerve-racking than using a mortiser. Square mortises require special bits, which can be bought individually or in sets.

What is a chain mortiser used for?

This is the ideal tool for small to medium size timber frame companies, while being simple enough to operate for the “do-it-yourself” home builders. The chain mortiser can plunge down a full 7-1/8″.

Are chain-cut mortisers obsolete?

Chain Mortisers In Praise of Cutting Chain Technology Few wood-cutting chain makers are left in the world, and some have deemed this technology obsolete. But how else do you cut mortises into timber frames or mortises for making windows and doors?

How deep can you cut with a chain mortiser?

The chain mortiser can plunge down a full 7-1/8″. One can make through mortises on large timbers by laying out and cutting from both sides of the timber. The 7104L will also cut up to 5-1/8″ long by 7-1/4″ wide mortises without repositioning the mortiser.

Why choose the Makita 7104l chain mortiser?

Choose an Option… Able to cut mortises both quickly and accurately, the durable Makita 7104L chain mortiser makes fast work of mortising with a head that pivots to three plunge positions. This is the ideal tool for small to medium size timber frame companies, while being simple enough to operate for the “do-it-yourself” home builders.
