Why we use Defected ground structure?

Abstract. Slots or defects integrated on the ground plane of microwave planar circuits are referred to as Defected Ground Structure. DGS is adopted as an emerging technique for improving the various parameters of microwave circuits, that is, narrow bandwidth, cross-polarization, low gain, and so forth.

What is defected microstrip structure?

Defected microstrip structure (DMS) is made by etching certain slot patterns in the microstrip line, and it exhibits the properties of slow-wave, rejecting microwaves in certain frequencies that are similar to the defected ground structure (DGS) but without any manipulation of the ground plane.

What is the use of DGS in antenna?

In microstrip antennas, DGS is used for the enhancement of gain and bandwidth. Also, it has been used for higher mode harmonic suppression, mutual coupling between elements, and to improve the characteristics of the microstrip antenna radiation.

What is meant by defected ground structure?

A defected ground structure (DGS), is a purposefully created defect on the ground plane of a printed microstrip board. It is typically created in the form of an etched-out pattern on the ground plane. DGS is a simplified form of Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) structure.

Why do antennas need a ground plane?

A metal surface (the larger and flatter, the better) is required underneath the CB antenna to launch the signal out into the atmosphere. Without an adequate ground plane surface the signal will not travel out into the atmosphere which results in limited transmission range.

How important is it to ground a antenna?

Grounding the antenna protects your signal booster or DAS from damage in case of lightning strikes. Lightning can strike the antenna and travel through the coaxial cable to your device, which will not only damage the signal boosting equipment but can cause a fire or shock people in the vicinity.

Do all antennas need a ground plane?

As a matter of fact, not all antennas do need a ground plane. To understand why this is, let us begin by looking at a dipole — an antenna that does not need a ground plane. Then, to see better what the ground plane does, we will look at a monopole — an antenna that does require a ground plane.

Does antenna need to be grounded?

Yes, all outdoor TV antennas should be grounded. Even if you have a newer plastic antenna, there is metal inside. Furthermore, TV signals are made of electricity. The antenna is essentially designed to capture that electricity.

When an aircraft antenna is required to be grounded it is grounded to?

The antenna system requires a “ground plane” for the radio wave to form. With dipoles, one half of the antenna is your ground. In verticals, something below must provide ground to complete the RF wave.

What is the effect of ground on antenna radiation?

If an antenna is grounded, the earth still acts as a minor and becomes part of the radiating system. The ungrounded antenna with its image forms a dipole array, but the bottom of the grounded antenna is joined to the top of the image. The system acts as an antenna of double size.

Why is ground used in antenna?

The antenna ground plane acts as a simulated ground. It is found that for a monopole antenna like a quarter wavelength vertical, the ground acts as a plane to reflect the radio waves so that an image of the top half of the antenna is seen in the Earth.
