What is a Phase 4 blend?

Phase 4 phonics does not require children to learn any uniquely new sounds, but to begin to recognise how the sounds they have already learned are often blended together into ‘clusters’. These clusters are useful for children to recognise on sight as it helps fluency when reading and spelling words.

What is a letter blend?

Certain combinations of two or more consonant letters are called letter blends. Letter blends appear in the beginning or at the end of words to create specific sounds. In letter blends you can hear the sound of each letter. If the letters make a single sound they are called digraphs.

What are blends in word list?

Consonant Blend Word Lists. Consonant blends, also referred to as consonant clusters, are a set of two or three consonant letters that when pronounced, retain their sound. Blends are found either at the beginning or end of a word. For example, in the word “break”, the “b” and “r” sounds are pronounced.

What Are Set 4 phonics?

Phase 4 phonics lasts at least 4 to 6 weeks and teaches children to blend and segment longer words with adjacent consonants. By the time children start phase 4, they will be able to represent each of 42 phonemes with a grapheme.

In Phase 4 words are often referred to in relation to how many vowels and consonants they contain. The word ‘cod’ is a CVC word (consonant / vowel / consonant). Other CVC words include: sad, net & him. The word ‘crab’ is a CCVC word (consonant / consonant / vowel / consonant).
