What is Carbopol gel used for?

Carbopol® (Carbomer) In the cosmetic industry, Carbopol is used as a thickener in lotions, creams and gels. It is also used to stabilize, suspend, and control the release of pharmaceutical products. At low concentrations, suspensions flow easily with a slippery feel.

How do you dissolve Carbopol gel?

Using moderate to vigorous agitation (800-1200 rpm), add the oil phase containing Carbopol® polymer to the water phase. The water phase should contain an appropriate neutralizing base. Continue to mix for 15-20 minutes until the Carbopol® polymer has swelled to produce a smooth emulsion.

What is the difference between carbomer and Carbopol?

Carbopol 934 is cross-linked with allyl sucrose and polymerized in benzene. Carbopol 71, 971, and 974 are cross-linked with allylpentaerythritol and polymerized in ethyl acetate. Carbomer polymers contain 56%–68% of carboxylic acid (–COOH) groups and 0.75%–2% of cross-linking agents.

Carbomer 940 should then be allowed to swell/hydrate. The pH of the Carbomer gel will be about 3.3 prior to neutralization (see 4).

  2. (12x)(X ml) = (3x)(200 ml)
  3. X ml = (3x)(200 ml) / 12x.
  4. X ml = 50 ml of 12x TBE.
