What is the meaning of Malassezia?

Medical Definition of Malassezia : a genus of lipophilic typically nonpathogenic yeastlike imperfect fungi including one (M. furfur synonym Pityrosporum oribiculare) that causes tinea versicolor and another (M. ovalis synonym Pityrosporum ovale) that is associated with seborrheic dermatitis.

What is Malassezia yeast?

Malassezia (Pityrosporum) Folliculitis. Pityrosporum (Malassezia) folliculitis happens when yeast that occurs as part of your skin’s natural flora multiplies and infects the hair follicles. The condition causes itchy pimples to form on your face, scalp and upper body.

Does everyone have Malassezia?

Malassezia globosa is a fungus present on the skin of many newborns. Often, it lives harmlessly in the top layer of skin without causing any problems. But for an estimated 50% of the population, it burrows into a hair follicle and sets up shop.

Does fluconazole treat folliculitis?

An antifungal is needed to treat pityrosporum folliculitis. An oral antifungal, such as itraconazole or fluconazole is used. These antifungals are off-label treatments because they’re not FDA-approved for this specific condition.

Pyrithione zinc kills Malassezia and all other fungi, and is highly effective against the Malassezia species actually found on scalp. Reduction in fungi reduces free fatty acids, thereby reducing scalp flaking and itch.

What color is Malassezia?

In light-skinned people the affected skin may appear darker than normal. The lesions are light pink in color but grow darker, turning a pale brown shade.
