What happens during a EGD?

Your doctor will pass an endoscope down your esophagus and into your stomach and upper part of your intestine. You may feel some pressure as the endoscope goes down your throat. A camera on the endoscope sends a video image to a monitor. This allows your doctor to examine your digestive tract.

Is an EGD considered surgery?

Often referred to as an upper endoscopy, an EGD is an invasive procedure that can help evaluate and manage several conditions that involve the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract. The tract consists of the esophagus, stomach, and upper portion of the small intestine.

How long does a EGD procedure take?

The procedure usually takes about 15-20 minutes. During the exam, there is often a feeling of pressure in the abdominal area. Your physician may give you medication to help you relax and better tolerate the exam. Patients usually lie on their left side.

Are you awake during an EGD?

You will be awake during the procedure, but you will take medicine to relax you (a sedative) before the test. Someone will have to drive you home afterward. Follow any other instructions your provider gives you to get ready.

Are you asleep for an EGD?

During Your EGD: The procedure typically takes between 10 to 30 minutes. You will lie on your left side. An anesthesiologist will administer an intravenous (IV) sedative so you sleep through the procedure. A plastic mouth guard is placed between your teeth to prevent damage to your teeth.

What is the prep for an EGD?

Nothing to eat or drink at least 8 hours before the procedure. Medication can be taken 4 hours before examination with little sips of water. DO NOT TAKE ANY ANTACIDS OR CARAFATE BEFORE THE PROCEDURE or any of the medications mentioned. Wear loose comfortable clothing.

Do you get the results of an endoscopy immediately?

In most cases the endoscopist will be able to tell you the results straight after the test or, if you have been sedated, as soon as you are awake, and you will receive a copy of the endoscopy report to take home. However, if a sample (biopsy) has been taken for examination the results may take a few weeks.
