Can you set up RAID with different drive sizes?

Honorable. It can be done, however the raid size is restricted to the smallest drive in the array. It’s generally frowned upon to use different drive types, let alone sizes for RAID, but it can be done if you don’t mind sacrificing the extra space on your larger drive to do it.

Can I use different size drives in Synology NAS?

Synology does allow you to mix different make and size drives.

Can you RAID 2 different size hard drives?

To quote the Wikipedia article on RAID: A RAID 0 can be created with disks of differing sizes, but the storage space added to the array by each disk is limited to the size of the smallest disk. For example, if a 100 GB disk is striped together with a 350 GB disk, the size of the array will be 200 GB (100 GB × 2).

Can you do RAID 5 with different size drives?

Re: Different size drives in RAID 5 & RAID configuration that’s no problem. You can add larger disk drives, but only the smallest size will be used. If you mix 36 GB, 72 GB and 146 GB drives in a RAID 5, only 36 GB of each disk will be used (72 GB useable capacity).

Do NAS drives have to be the same model?

The new drive does not need to be the same model, it will need to have at least the same capacity or larger.

Can you mix SSD and HDD in Synology?

Mixing HDDs & SSDs is useless as the performance will drop to the HDD speed (please read how RAID 5 and/or RAID 10 works). Thats why if you need to mix, please use the SSDs as cache.

Does RAID require identical drives?

The only absolute requirement for matching drive specs in a RAID 10 array is that the drives must be of the same architecture, e.g., all SAS or SATA.

Can you mix drive sizes in a RAID 5?

Re: Can you mix drive sizes within a RAID 5 array? Yes but each drive of the array is only formated to the size of the smallest drive.

Can RAID 6 use different size drives?

Using both 1 TB disks and 0.5 TB disks, how to create a RAID 6 array using different drive sizes? The solution is fairly simple. Just put two 0.5 TB disks together in one RAID 0 volume and you’ll have a ‘virtual’ 1 TB disk. Since I had four 0.5 TB disks, I could create 2 ‘virtual’ 1 TB disks.

Can you mix SSD and HDD in RAID?

Even though it’s possible to set up a RAID with SSD and HDD, the outcome will be an array performing only as fast as the slowest drive. Mixing RAID with SSD and HDD will lower the bar if you consider any RAID configuration, whether striping, mirroring, or parity, simply because an HDD can do only so much.

Can I mix hard drives in a NAS?

If you are not creating RAID but have two separate volumes for each drive, then you can benefit from maximums speed from the black drive or pro drive. But yes, you can mix drives.

Can I mix SSD and HDD in RAID?

Do all drives in a RAID 5 have to be the same size?

Do all drives have to be the same model and capacity for a RAID 5 array? The short answer is No, the drives don’t have to be exactly the same. The longer explanation is that for compatibility reasons, we usually recommend using the same model.
