What Type of Vehicle Should You Drive? In order to drive the White Rim Road, a high-clearance 4×4 vehicle is required by the National Park Service. It must be a true 4×4 (not AWD) and have high-clearance. You will drive some very rough sections, over large rocks and boulders, and on rutted roads.

How difficult is White Rim Trail?

White Rim Trail conditions range from intermediate to highly technical. It is rated moderately difficult for high-clearance, 4WD vehicles in fair weather conditions. There are portions of the route where one wrong may be disastrous, and tricky sections requiring three-point turns.

Do you need a permit to ride the White Rim Trail?

All vehicles, motorbikes, and bicyclists must have a day-use permit for single day trips on the White Rim. If your trip plan does not pass by a visitor center or requires an early start (before normal business hours), you must obtain a day-use permit online the day before.

The White Rim Trail is a moderately rough, but decently maintained 4WD jeep road. There is no potable water anywhere along the trail, so unless you are a stellar biker who can confidently bike the entire 100 miles in a day, it is best to be accompanied by a 4WD support vehicle.
