Is SunRace a good brand?

SunRace MZ is not perfect but it’s very good, especially for what is essentially a first generation product. SunRace MZ 12-speed is sexier than NX and cheaper than XX1, so it may well hit the sweet spot for riders looking to go from 11- to 12-speed as simply as possible.

It was formed in 1972 and is owned by Yi-Hsung Hsu, the current CEO. Its core product lines are derailleurs, shifters and freewheels and cassettes but it also produces cranks, hubs and chains. SunRace has the capacity to produce more than a million drivetrain sets a month and employs 250 people.

Most manufacturers’ cassettes (and freehub body splines) are compatible with Shimano (SRAM, Sun Race etc.), while Campagnolo cassettes use different freehub splines – that is explained on. Sturmey Archer was bought from the Derby Corporation (US owners of Raleigh) at the beginning of July for a reported £3m. The buyers Lenark Ltd. of London acquired the assets and goodwill but did not acquire Sturmeys Triumph Road site.

Other component compatibility: This cassette is compatible with SRAM Eagle drivetrains. It is only compatible with the SRAM XD Driver freehub standard via the use of the included Sunrace adaptor.

“Sun first began the production of cycle parts in 1885 and by 1906 were producing a range of machines. Their main period of fame was from the middle 20s through to the 50s. The Wasp was a popular almost budget priced lightweight aimed at the Clubman.

In 1959 they became part of the British Cycle Corporation which was absorbed by Raleigh in 1960. From 1963 Sun machines bore the badge with Worksop rather than their original Birmingham. The name finally died under Raleigh in 1986. There a few good quality Team Replica bikes from the Sun/Truewel Racing Team made in the late 60s.”
