Can you cure SMA1?
There is no known cure for SMA. One in 35 people in Australia unknowingly carry the faulty SMA gene. Being a carrier does not mean you are affected by the condition. Spinraza is the first and only treatment of its kind to be listed on the PBS for SMA.
What are the causes of SMA 1?
SMA1 is caused by changes (pathogenic variants also called genetic changes) in the SMN1 gene and is typically inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. Diagnosis of SMA1 is suspected by symptoms and confirmed by genetic testing.
